Abstract
Simple expressions are given for the effective Newtonian viscosity as a function of concentration as well as for the effective visco-elastic behavior as a function of concentration and frequency for neutral mon odisperse hard sphere colloidal suspensions over the entire fluid rang e. The basic physical mechanisms underlying these formulae are discuss ed. The agreement with existing experiments is very good. Extensions t o charged colloidal suspensions and the incorporation of hydrodynamic interactions in the theory are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Lt d.
