Abstract
Phanerochaete chrysosporium was found to be able to decolorize acrylic basi c dye Red 2B, the extent of which was determined by monitoring the decrease in absorbance at the wavelength maximum (547.5 nm.) for the dye. Effect of different N-sources viz : peptone, yeast extract, urea and C-sources viz: glucose, starch, lactose, sucrose was studied. All of them gave substantial decolorization (>70%). Effect of concentration of N-source and C-source in culture medium was also observed. It was found that the organism is able t o decolorize the dye by using it as sole carbon source. The decolorization of this dye occurred during secondary metabolism, was suppressed in culture s grown in the presence of high levels of nitrogen, Decolorization was best under 0.5% concentration of peptone in the culture medium.
