Elsinoe mangiferae, the cause of mango scab, was identified for the fi
rst time in Australia in January 1997 as a result of intense investiga
tion into severe scarring and distortion of mangoes in the Darwin rura
l area of the Northern Territory. Spotting and scarring of mango fruit
had been observed in the Northern Territory since about 1990 and was
commonly believed by growers to be due to a form of anthracnose caused
by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides.
