The range of natural ellagitannins is extended by identification of five ne
w metabolites with C-1(4) glucose core, designated as pelargoniins A-D and
isocorilagin, and the new phyllanthusiin E methyl ester. They are accompani
ed in the aerial parts of Pelargonium reniforme by two known structurally r
elated metabolites, corilagin and phyllanthusiin C, two phenolcarboxylic ac
ids, brevifolincarboxylic acid and phyllanthusiin E, the gallotannin 1-O-ga
lloyl-beta-D-glucopyranose, and the ellagitannins strictinin and isostricti
nin having a C-4(1)-glucose core. The structures of these compounds were es
tablished from spectroscopic studies. This is the first example of the co-o
ccurrence of ellagitannins with C-4(1) and C-1(4) glucopyranose core demons
trated for a member of the Geraniaceae. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All
