The diamagnetic complexes [Ni(HL)L]Cl . 2H(2)O (I) and [Ni(HL)L]NO3 (II) an
d the paramagnetic complex Ni(HL)(2)Cl-2 (III) (mu(eff) = 3.2 mu(B)) were p
repared by reactions of nickel(II) salts with N-(3-hydroximino-2-methylbut-
2-yl)methylamine (HL). The crystal structures of I and II were determined.
The yellow crystals of these compounds belong to the orthorhombic system. T
he unit cell parameters of I: a = 9.981(2) Angstrom, b = 12.887(3) Angstrom
, c = 28.663(6) Angstrom; V = 3686.8(14) Angstrom(3); Z = 8, space group Pb
ca, rho(calcd) = 1.404 g/cm(3), R-1 = 0.0395; II: a = 11.227(2) Angstrom, b
=21.051(4) Angstrom, c = 7.256(1) Angstrom; V= 1714.9(5) Angstrom(3); Z = 4
, space group Pbcn, rho(calcd) 1.472 g/cm(3), R-1 = 0.0258. The crystal str
uctures of I and II are ionic; they are formed by the [Ni(HL)L](+) cations
(square NiN4 unit) and outer-sphere Cl- or NO3- anions. The data of IR and
electronic spectroscopy suggest that the light blue compound III contains a
n octahedral NiN4Cl2 unit.
