The state of water in aromatic polyamide acid (PAA) membranes with various
degrees of imidization are studied. Gravimetry and IR spectroscopy measurem
ents suggest that the degree of dehydration of the membranes increases with
the degree of imidization. At low degrees of imidization, water is practic
ally uniformly distributed between the structural units of the PAA membrane
, while the disordered state of water prevails in highly imidized membranes
.
