Abstract
PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS BASED ON THE molecular structure of viruses suggests
that there has been multiple transmission of so-called simian immunodeficie
ncy viruses from African primates to human beings, giving rise to both HIV-
1 and HIV-2. Doubt remains about when and how the AIDS pandemic began.
