Abstract
Based on a new photochemical access to benzocyclobutenes, tricyclic nitroge n containing heterocycles were synthesized. The thermolytic transformation of the benzocyclobutene moiety into ortho quinodimethane intermediates as d iene in an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction constitutes a second key ste p of the synthesis.
