For meeting the EU standards existing installations have to be upgraded to
nutrient removal (nitrogen and phosphorus). One of these installations is t
he WWTP of the city of Bruges. In the process design phase of the WWTP a pi
lot study and dynamic modelling are used to optimise the dimensions of the
different tanks. To minimise the load overflowing in the collector system i
t is decided to increase the maximum flow through the WWTP using a storm wa
ter regime in the aeration tank.
