Abstract
We have produced bismuth-filled carbon nanotubes by heating solid bismuth n anoparticles with single-walled carbon nanotubes. Most of the filled nanotu bes are one-dimensional nanowires with high aspect ratios. Some of the nano tubes have a second layer formed during the filling process. We have also o bserved nanotube structure change due to atom loss upon electron irradiatio n. This effect may help us understand the filling mechanism. (C) 2000 Elsev ier Science Ltd.
