The biochemical markers of bone formation are comprised of products of oste
oblastic synthesis. These include N- and C-propeptides of type I collagen,
osteocalcin, and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase. This article reviews t
he biochemistry and physiology of these markers. The various methods curren
tly available for their determination are evaluated. Finally, the clinical
use of these markers in the management of osteoporosis is discussed.
