Area rules are determined for the normal penetration of a projectile i
nto a ductile target under conditions of the localized projectile-targ
et interaction. Bodies of revolution and three-dimensional projectiles
with a close shape and the same distribution of the cross-sectional a
rea along the longitudinal axis are considered. It is shown that the d
ifference in the ballistic limits of the bodies is of the order of eps
ilon(2) where epsilon is the order of the difference in their shapes.
