The recovery of the dynamic level of the Black Sea from TOPEX/POSEIDON sate
llite altimetric measurements is considered; the information is subsequentl
y assimilated into a numerical model. The accuracy of recovery of the dynam
ic level is estimated by comparing it with the sea level calculated from Co
mSBlack'93 hydrological survey data. It is shown that there is a good corre
spondence between the mean-square deviations and the spectra of fluctuation
s of the level on spatial scales of from 50 km and on timescales of from on
e month. The method and preliminary results from the assimilation of TOPEX/
POSEIDON data into a numerical model of the Black Sea are considered.
