Immunotherapy is a form of immunomodulation that decreases the hypersensiti
vity response to allergens. It has stood the test of time and is an importa
nt treatment modality for subjects suffering from inhalant allergic disease
s and Hymenoptera sting hypersensitivity. In contrast to pharmacologic ther
apies, immunotherapy offers the possibility of addressing the fundamental p
athophysiologic process of allergy-the release of mast cell and basophil me
diators upon contact with specific allergens.
