Abstract
Treatment of several alkyl-substituted dipropynylated benzenes in the prese nce of tungsten hexacarbonyl and I-chlorophenol at 150 degrees C leads to t he formation of poly(pava-phenyleneethynylene)s (PPEs). The obtained PPEs a re of moderate molecular weights but form in good to excellent yields. Dihe xyl-, dinonyl-, and didodecyl-PPE have been made by this route. It is the f irst time that a tungsten-containing in situ catalyst system is reported to be;active for alkyne metathesis. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
