Most people would classify telecommunications as a 'green' industry. Using
the telephone or videoconferencing avoids the need to travel and thus cuts
pollution. However, providing a telecommunications service consumes resourc
es, generates waste and impacts on the environment. This article describes
how BT started and evolved its environmental management system from modest
beginnings in 1992 to achieving ISO14001 accreditation for all its UK opera
tions at the end of 1999.
