In Washington state, practicing physicians have been forced to confron
t the emotional, complex issue of physician-assisted suicide sooner th
an physicians elsewhere in the US.(1-12) The Washington State Medical
Association has struggled at length with the issue and ultimately deli
neated a policy on safeguards for physician-assisted suicide. The Wash
ington experience may prove instructive to other professional physicia
n organizations even before the US Supreme Court rules on the issue.
