Abstract
The actualistic method was applied to assess the causes of asymmetry in lat itudinal zoning of Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian faunas, Early Permi an benthic fauna located northeast of the Pangaea-2 supercontinent is chara cterized as more cold-water fauna than that located northwest of the contin ent. This can be explained by the opposing directions of the coastal curren ts of the northern subpolar gyre at the same latitudes. For the first time, paleogeographic elements of the fauna at the species level are distinguish ed in the same manner as is done in modern marine biogeography. A model of biochore evolution in the Late Paleozoic and Triassic seas is presented.
