Introduction and general aspects

The development in organoselenium chemistry has been expanding rapidly over the last several years. The different reactivity of selenium-containing co mpounds in contrast to the sulfur analogs has led to versatile and new synt hetic methods in organic chemistry. The principles of organoselenium chemis try are traced back to their origins. A survey on organoselenium compounds is combined with a short introduction to the various chapters of this book.
