We have investigated the behavior of the tunneling conductance between two
coupled electron waveguides with a numerical model for a wide range of valu
es of the coupling length. We have then focused on the study of the conditi
on of short coupling length, by means of a semianalytical model, which has
enabled us to explain in detail the width and shape of the conductance peak
s, in terms of the characteristics of the barrier dividing the two waveguid
es and of the coupling length. Conclusions are drawn that can provide new e
xplanations for existing measurements and that prompt renewed experimental
activities.
