Abstract
This paper describes a new solution procedure, the local arc-length me thod, for structures with strain-softening materials, which is a devel opment of the arc-length method. The new procedure is based on the use of a constraint equation which uses displacement parameters associate d with the localized failure zone in such structures. Numerical exampl es show that this new procedure is more reliable than current versions of the arc-length method. (C) 1997 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Scienc e Ltd.
