The nanostructured compound FeTiH was obtained by high-energy mechanical gr
inding of a Fe-TiH2 mixture (at a 1 : 1 ratio) in an argon atmosphere. The
structure and phase state of the mixture at various instants of grinding we
re determined by X-ray powder diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy As a r
esult of mechanical action on the mixture of iron with titanium hydride, hy
drogen is evolved from the structure of titanium hydride and is actively in
volved in phase formation by contributing to grinding and mutual diffusion
of the elements. This leads to the formation of a fine-dispersed heterogene
ous mixture whose ordering is most likely similar to that in the FeTiH phas
e. The mixture contains also a disordered solid solution TiH2-x(Fe) formed
on the basis of the initial TiH2.
