Abstract
The reaction of NiCl2. 6H(2)O with potassium pivalate leads to the formatio n of a green polymeric mass; extraction of this mass with hexane leaves a p ale green precipitate. The latter reacts with an excess of alpha,alpha-dipy ridyl (dipy) in boiling acetonitrile to give the soluble mononuclear ionic complex [Ni(dipy)(2)(H2O)(OOCCMe3]Cl-+(-) (I) and a precipitate whose react ion with silver triflate results in the formation of the mononuclear comple x [Ni(H2O)(6)](2+)(otf)(2)(-) (II). Compounds I and II are characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.
