An electron spin resonance study of copper(II) complexing in the phase of c
omplexing fibrous sorbents based on poly(acrylonitrile) bearing amidoxime a
nd hydrazidine groups is reported. It is established that sorption in POLIO
RGS 34, which mainly bears amidoxime groups, produces Cu(N,N)(2) complexes
with four-membered chelate rings in the sorbent phase. When copper(II) is s
orbed on POLIORGS 35, two types of complexes with bidentate hydrazidine gro
ups are produced in the sorbent phase. In one of them, the metal atom is bo
nded with two functional groups; in the other, it is bonded with one such g
roup. The high strength of the bond of copper(II) with the functional group
s in POLIORGS 33 as compared to other sorbents might be due to the formatio
n of a copper(II) complex with stable five-membered chelate rings. In the P
OLIORGS 33 phase, the amidoxime complex Cu(N,O)(2) is the dominant species.
