Experimental observations of morphological and chemical changes in superpla
stically deformed samples of Zn-22% Al alloy have been carried out. It has
been shown that the superplastic deformation exerts a strong influence on t
he process of diffusional mass transfer. A conclusion has been made that th
e specific feature of the superplastic deformation-development of bands of
the co-operative grain boundary sliding-may explain the mechanism of such a
n influence. (C) 2000 Acta Metallurgica Inc. Published by Elsevier Science
