Plato's apology of Critias in the Charmides reflected and implicitly critic
ized the reinforcement of the Athenian ultrademocrats' sympathies for an in
dependent Thebes which began in 382, in the shadow of happenings recreating
404-403 BC. A victim of Ismenias and his Athenian friends, a laconophile a
nd promoter of peace, the Charmides' Critias implicitly warns his fellow-ci
tizens and many other Greeks against their disregard of aristocratic sophro
syne.
