Abstract
Gaussian beam propagation in planar ion-exchange waveguides with an in homogeneous refractive index has been investigated by means of a varia tional method. Analytical expressions for both the oscillations of the beam width and the trajectory of the centre of the beam have been der ived. The solutions obtained yield to a very simple picture of the beh aviour of gaussian light beams in this kind of media. The comparison w ith the numerical simulations presented, shows good agreement.
