Jb. Chapin et al., SPECIES COMPOSITION OF HELIOTHINAE CAPTURED IN CONE TRAPS BAITED WITHSYNTHETIC BOLLWORM OR TOBACCO BUDWORM PHEROMONES, The Southwestern entomologist, 22(2), 1997, pp. 223-231
The species composition of the Heliothinae captured in cone traps bait
ed with synthetic pheromones of the bollworm, Helicoverpa tea (Boddie)
, or tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), was determined in Loui
siana in 1992. Only tobacco budworms comprised the 49,729 specimens fr
om traps baited with tobacco budworm lure. The 25,819 specimens collec
ted in traps baited with bollworm lure included one Heliothis phloxiph
aga Grote and Robinson, 10 specimens that may be hybrids between the b
ollworm and Fl. phloxiphaga, and 15 tobacco budworms. These small numb
ers of other Heliothinae, however, would not affect the interpretation
of pheromone trap catches of these species or insecticide resistance
monitoring data.
