Distributed operating systems and distributed system environments are
the two major streams of achieving distributed processing. Because of
the difference in the design philosophies, they present different feat
ures to end users. This paper analyses and compares the design objecti
ves, system architectures and implementation techniques of the two typ
es of systems. It also discusses their different features and their im
pacts on computing communities.
