Abstract
A general and globally accepted formal theory for workflow management is st ill not in sight. Since workflow management is said to be very application- driven, the question arises, whether a formal theory is necessary and possi ble at all. This article identifies the major domains of workflow managemen t and discusses the necessity of formal theory and pragmatic approaches, re spectively.
