The mechanical characteristics of earthquake-resistant structures and the g
round motion properties that have an important influence on the seismic per
formance of structures with asymmetric load-deformation behaviour, are iden
tified from the results obtained from a parametric study of the dynamic res
ponse of single-degree-of-freedom systems. The dynamic response of tilted s
ingle and multi-degree-of-freedom systems, designed according to Mexican re
quirements for the design of asymmetric structures is studied. After a gene
ral understanding of this phenomenon is offered, shortcomings in current de
sign requirements for tilted structures are discussed. Research needs to es
tablish a rational design approach of this type of structures are identifie
