In this paper, comparative study of two schemes of four-guadrant GTO conver
ter-fed DC motor drive is carried out. The schemes considered are (i) a PWM
GTO dual converter and (ii) a single PWM GTO-converter with a static rever
sing switch. Both of them offer superior performances compared to conventio
nal line commutated converter-fed DC motor drives. The performances of the
two schemes are compared Sor the case of both open-loop and closed-loop spe
ed control systems. The results are experimentally verified in the laborato
ry with a 3-hp DC motor.
