D. Rollinson et al., OBSERVATIONS ON COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN BULINUS-TRUNCATUS AND SCHISTOSOMA-HAEMATOBIUM IN THE SENEGAL RIVER BASIN, Annals of tropical medicine and parasitology, 91(4), 1997, pp. 371-378
In experiments to determine the compatibility between isolates of Schi
stosoma haematobium and Bulinus truncatus from Mall and Senegal, the p
arasite isolates were shown to differ in their intermediate host speci
ficity. Bulinus truncatus from the Levier and Middle Valleys (Senegal)
and the Upper Valley (Mall) of the Senegal River Basin (SRB) were all
susceptible to S. haematobium isolated from the urines of children li
ving in Tenegue, Office du Niger, Mall. However, none of the B. trunca
tus tested was susceptible to a parasite isolated from children living
in Mbodiene, a village in the Lower Valley of the SRB, where natural
transmission is normally associated with B. globosus. As B. truncatus
is widely distributed in the SRB, the possible appearance of a Bulinus
-truncatus-borne parasite in the Middle and Lower Valleys should be ca
refully monitored.
