The mechanics of flowing granular materials such as coal, sand, agricultura
l products, fertilizers, dry chemicals, metal ores, etc., and their Row cha
racteristics have received considerable attention in recent years. In this
paper, the governing equations for the how of granular materials are derive
d using a continuum approach. For a fully developed flow of these materials
down an inclined plane, the equations reduce to a system of coupled non-li
near ordinary differential equations for the case where the material proper
ties are assumed to vary quadratically with the volume fraction. The bounda
ry value problem is solved numerically and the results are presented for th
e volume fraction and velocity profiles. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
