Alkaline-earth-metal dihexadecyl phosphate salts were synthesized, and thei
r thermal stability was evaluated by thermogravimetry. Their thermotropic l
iquid crystal behaviour was investigated by differential scanning calorimet
ry, polarizing optical microscopy, dilatometry, and X-ray diffraction. On h
eating, the calcium, strontium, and barium salts exhibit columnar liquid cr
ystal phases, whereas the less ionic beryllium and magnesium salts melt dir
ectly into isotropic liquids.
