The aim of this paper is to discuss the limitations of the conventional mod
e-locking parameter delta, and to introduce new Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM
) criteria that we believe to be more reliable indicators of the preference
for mode-locked operation in real-world diode-pumped lasers. The new crite
ria take into account both the losses at an intra-cavity slit and the gain-
aperturing by the pump profile in the laser medium. The criteria are compar
ed to the conventional delta criterion and applied to both 4-element and 3-
element cavities, The interplay of gain aperture and slit aperture KLM is i
nvestigated for 4-element systems. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B
