We show that specific signatures in the pair distribution function and x-ra
y and neutron-scattering structure factors in a variety of functional elast
ic materials, previously ascribed to local structural distortions, could in
stead he due to an underlying anisotropic, long-range elastic field. We ill
ustrate this conclusion on simple textures, e.g., twins, tweed, using relax
ational computer simulations, pair distribution function analysis, and stru
cture factors in two dimensions.
