Abstract
The interlayer coupling strength in Ni/Cu/Ni trilayers on Cu(001) depends s trongly on the roughness of the surface of the topmost Ni layer and on the hydrogen coverage. Smoothing of the Ni surface increases mostly the couplin g strength of the short period oscillation contribution. Hydrogen adsorptio n causes an enhancement and a phase change of this short period.
