The giant intrinsic hysteresis as a function of hydrogen concentration x in
the optical and electrical properties of the archetypal switchable mirror
YHx is eliminated by alloying Y with the chemically similar La. The La1-zYz
Hx films with z less than or equal to 0.67 are essentially hysteresis-free.
The origin of the large hysteresis of alloys with z greater than or equal
to 0.86 is the large uniaxial lattice expansion that accompanies their fee
to hexagonal phase transition in combination with lateral clamping.
