A single-stage heat transformer operating with the water/lithium bromide mi
xture was operated to demonstrate the feasibility of the use of these syste
ms to increase the temperature of the heat obtained from solar ponds. Elect
rical heaters at temperatures not higher than 80 degrees C were used to sim
ulate the heat input to an absorption heat transformer from a solar pond. G
ross temperature lifts, useful heat and coefficients of performance are plo
tted for the heat transformer against temperatures and solution concentrati
ons. Gross temperature lifts as high as 44 degrees C were obtained. The max
imum temperature of the useful heat produced by the heat transformer operat
ing with the water/lithium bromide mixture was 124 degrees C. The maximum c
oefficient of performance for the unit was 0.16. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science
