A time-independent one-dimensional model of the electron energy balance in
the region of the magnetic filter of a volume plasma-based ion source is ju
stified. The local electron energy balance equation and the steady density
profiles of the plasma components are used to determine the transverse (wit
h respect to the magnetic field) electron temperature profile, which is fou
nd to agree well with the experimental profile. The temperature profile obt
ained analytically is then used to refine the particle balance in a plasma
with two ion species and, accordingly, to find the optimum conditions for t
he formation of an H-/D- beam and for extracting the beam from the source.
