Y. Araki et al., Effectiveness of restorative total colectomy combined laparoscopy for ulcerative colitis, 7TH WORLD CONGRESS OF ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY, 2000, pp. 229-232
The aims of this paper are to evaluate the effectiveness of total colectomy
combined laparoscopy (TCL; n=13) with ileal J-pouch anal anastomosis in co
mparison with conventional open total colectomy (:OTC; n=11) in patients wi
th ulcerative colitis. Nasogastric tube could be removed after POD 1.1 vs.
4.8 (p<0.05), the mean time to passage of stool was 1.8 (range, 1 to 3) vs.
5.4 (range, 3 to 7) days (p<0.05), and in the TCL group watery stool was s
oon made solid after POD 25.4 vs. 87.3 (p<0.01). There were no significant
differences in the mean ope:rating time and mean operating blood loss betwe
en two groups. Postoperative complication rates were lower in the TCL group
than in the OTC group (38.5 vs. 45.5 %). The findings of this study indica
te that TCL might be a safe and effective treatment for the elective surger
y of ulcerative colitis.
