Y. Ichinose et al., Laparoscopic treatment of asymptomatic bilateral obturator hernias using polypropylene mesh plugs, 7TH WORLD CONGRESS OF ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY, 2000, pp. 449-453
We present a rare case of asymptomatic bilateral obturator hernias which we
re treated by laparoscopic repair using polypropylene mesh plugs. A patient
was diagnosed by Barium enema as having nonstrangulated Richter's hernia o
f the sigmoid colon in the left obturator foramen. Laparoscopically, a segm
ent of the small intestine, instead of the sigmoid colon, prolapsed into th
e left obturator foramen and Richter's hernia of the colon through the righ
t obturator foramen was also identified Reduction of the herniated viscera
followed by insertion of a polypropylene mesh plug into both obturator fora
mens and closure of the peritoneum by a hernia stapler was performed. Lapar
oscopic repair of the asymptomatic obturator hernia using polypropylene mes
h plug could be a minimally invasive procedure which can be successfully pe
rformed.
