This study reviews our experience with ultrasound-guided interventional pro
cedures, performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, in the setting
of a general surgery training program. The records of all ultrasound examin
ations conducted by surgical residents and staff during a 12 month period w
ere reviewed (n=131). Twenty one were performed to guide a diagnostic (n=7)
or therapeutic (n=14) intervention. Six of the seven procedures performed
for diagnostic purposes were successful (85.7%). Thirteen of the fourteen e
xaminations done for therapeutic indications were successful (92.8%). There
were no complications related to ultrasound-guided interventions. We concl
ude that surgeons can safely and effectively perform ultrasound examination
s for interventional purposes. Early experience should be complemented by a
dditional diagnostic or therapeutic procedures if necessary.
