Abstract
It is uncertain whether left ventricular (LV) shape is altered as a consequ ence of intensive athletic conditioning. We assessed LV dimensions and shap e by Fourier analysis from digitized LV endocardial borders in 22 elite row ers and 14 untrained controls. Athletes had greatly increased LV cavity dim ension, wall thickness, volume, and mass; however, LV shape was normal in a thletes, and associated with normal ejection fraction and diastolic filling pattern.
