Sixty gliomas obtained by neurosurgical resections were examined. Paraffin
blocks were retrieved from pathological files of the Second Affiliated Hosp
ital in Guangzhou Medical College. The methods of argyrophilic technique fo
r AgNORs staining, and image Analysis System for measurement of AgNORs were
used. Six parameters, which included hcount, count, nana, agnrea, agpern a
nd agperc were used to correlated well with histopathological grades (compa
red gr-ade 2 & 3, grade 3 & 4, and grade 2 & 4, respectively). We concluded
that AgNORs is useful in evaluating proliferative activity and assessing t
he malignancy of human gliomas. It may also be used as a target for anti-ne
oplastic drugs in the treatment of gliomas.
