A two-dimensional model for electromagnetic wave propagation in a dusty pla
sma crystal is solved using plane wave expansion techniques. We show that p
hotonic band gaps, where propagation is forbidden, can occur for a range of
Debye length scale sizes with respect to the dust particle size. We find t
hat band gap features are dependent on the plasma sheath characteristics of
the dusty plasma crystal. In addition we compute the damping due to the co
nductivity of the dusty plasma crystal.
