Abstract
A dynamic contact algorithm for the case of an isotropic projectile impacti ng an orthotropic target is proposed in this paper. The projectile and the target are scattered into finite elements, then the process of the projecti le impacting the target is regarded as a dynamic contact process between a node of the projectile and a surface of an element of the target. The dynam ic contact conditions are determined based on the conditions of their defor mation and the law of conservation of momentum. The effect of propagating s peed of elastic wave in different materials on transmission of momentum is also accounted in calculating the conservation of momentum. In order to val idate the algorithm, two examples are given and compared to references. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
