F. Pain et al., COMPARISON OF TWISTED AND PARALLEL NEMATIC LIQUID-CRYSTAL POLARIZATION CONTROLLERS - APPLICATION TO A 4X4 FREE-SPACE OPTICAL SWITCH AT 1.5 MU-M, Optics communications, 139(4-6), 1997, pp. 199-204
This paper describes the design of a polarisation controller using a n
ematic Liquid crystal in the infrared. Theoretical comparison of paral
lel and twisted structures is made. Our samples reach 30 dB contrast a
nd 1.4 dB insertion loss. Twisted nematic cells were used to perform a
4 X 4 strictly non-blocking optical switch at 1.5 mu m with 15.2 dB f
ibre to fibre loss and less than -28 dB cross-talk.
