Abstract
Codimension-two bifurcation problems have been considered to account f or spontaneous polarization symmetry breaking and polarization symmetr y restoration in an anisotropic dye laser with a saturable absorber. I n spite of the symmetry with respect to the cavity axis distribution o f the excited molecules and isotropic cavity, polarized laser output h as been observed in the form of asymmetric steady state operation, aut o-oscillations and chaos. Polarization symmetry is restored when the a ttractors' coupling strength (orientational relaxation and pumping rat e) increases.
